Motorcycle helmets are motorcycle apparel designed to protect riders from head injuries in motorcycle accidents. Motorcycle helmets must be certified to meet international or local safety standards (e.g. DOT, Snell). Non-certified helmets cannot legally be called motorcycle helmets. A motorcycle helmet damaged in an accident or dropped by accident must be replaced because helmets are designed to break in a crash in order to absorb the forces directed toward the skull. Motorcycle helmets are divided into five basic types: full face helmets, modular helmets, open face helmets, half helmets, and motocross helmets. Full face and modular helmets can provide the most protection.
